Learn about the Names of God and Jesus.

An interesting section about customs and garments.

Some of our favorite links and sites we can recommend.

Along with using “different” names

(see the What’s in a Name page)

We also have some customs that seem different to some

first time visitors.  Here is our explanation for these.

So WHY DO WE….

…. Wear Tallits?  or  PRAYER SHAWLS  (Numbers 15:38-41)

We wear Tallits, sometime called prayer shawls, because of the commandment given to the Children of Israel to make tzitzith or tassels

with a blue thread on the corners of their garments as an everlasting ordinance.  The tassel was to be looked upon and to remind the Children

of Israel of their God and to keep His commandments found in His Word.  Originally this was accomplished by placing tassels on everyday garments, like a tunic.  However during times of great persecution for their faith, the practice began evolving into the Jews wearing a little tallit (Tallit Katan) as an undergarment so that it could be hidden, and they would wear the large Tallit (Tallit Gadol) to worship services, even as you see in practice today.

….Wear Kippas? or  HEAD COVERINGS.  (Leviticus 10:6)

A Kippa, as known to some as a Yarmulke is basically a head covering.

The Levites, the priestly tribe of the Israelites, were commanded by God to always cover their heads in the presence of God – it was a symbol of humility.  No where are we commanded that we all have to wear kippas, but nor are we prohibited from doing so.  The choice to wear a Kippa is a personal one between a man and his God.  If one chooses to wear a kippa, in particular a minister of the Gospel (who is acting in a sense as a Levite) it should serve as a reminder to all, that no one man is to be revered as having all truth and knowledge, but that there is One above every minister, Who is God, Who alone has all knowledge, truth, and power.

Anyone who comes to our congregation is free to wear

or not to wear prayer garments or head coverings, as

you feel lead by God.

Why do we honor the Torah so highly? (Deut 31:11-12)

It is not that we honor the Torah any more than the rest of the Word of God.  The whole Word

of God from Genesis to Revelation IS the WORD of GOD. There is no “Old” and “New” Testament – there is only a 400 year gap between the two – BIG DEAL!  - It is all one book!  We do however emphasize the Torah, because it is the first of God’s revelation to man, and it is what Jesus would have studied while on the earth.

Why do we blow shofars?

(Joel 2:1) The shofar or ram’s horn was blown to call the assembly of Israel together or to mark a holy day.  Jewish tradition says that the sound of the shofar drives the devil absolutely crazy!

Why do w light two candles on Sabbath?

(Exodus 20:8)  On the Sabbath two candles are traditionally lit, because in the Ten Commandments it says to “remember” and “sanctify” the Sabbath day. Therefore one candle reminds us to remember, and the other reminds us to sanctify the Sabbath day.

MOST IMPORTANTLY WHY DO WE BELIEVE THAT YAHSHUA IS MESSIAH ?

Because if you study your Bible diligently you will see that Yahshua, Jesus is the One whom all of the prophets foretold, and of whom the Torah speaks as

the Prophet who is to come!  (Deuteronomy 18:18-19)
