If you
come to one of our services, it is likely that you will hear some words and names used that are not always what you are used to. Here
are some of the explanations.
The Hebrew consonants, Yood-Hay-Vav-Hay,
YHVH, this is the Holy name given to Moses by God from the burning bush. While some will not say His name,
preferring to call Him “HaShem” – literally “The Name”, Scripture indicates
that God wants us to call on him by name, and
not call upon “Ba-al” (generically meaning
lord.) Yahshua, Jesus has given us again this privilege, in that we can now
approach our heavenly Father with pure
lips. Some render YHVH as Yahweh, we
believe the closest pronunciation is probably closer to Yahuvah. God does
not see our mis-pronunciation as sin, any more than a father is angry at
his two year old for being unable to call him “father”, but instead only
being able to call him “da-da”!
When Jesus was born, the angel told His parents to call Him a
name literally meaning “Salvation”. In
Hebrew, “Yahshua” literally means Yah’s salvation,
or the salvation of Yahuvah. Jesus, simply does
not translate to salvation. In Greek,
the language of the New Testament, the word for salvation is swzw “sozo”
(sode’-zo) – so how did we come up with the Greek Ihsouj Iesous, eventually
translating to Jesus? Some say Iesous is a masculine variant
of Ieso, a greek
“goddess” of healing. Jesus said in the
Scriptures that “He comes in His Father’s name”, He is YAHshua,
son of YAHuvah, the Salvation of Yah! But if you praise Him Jesus, that’s OK too,
it’s like calling your
friend Robert – “Bobby”!
